About Department

 The department offers a one-year Bachelor in Library and Information Science course and two year integrated Master's degree in Library and Information Science to impart skills and training necessary for effective organization and management of libraries and information centres. The revised syllabus incorporates the latest developments in Information Technology and their applications in information storage and retrieval. The course is supplemented with practical training to develop the essential skills in computer operation, processing and working of library software. The course carries both internal and external evaluation.

History

Bachelor of Library and Information Science course started in Farook College in 1993, for the first time in an affiliated college in the State of Kerala. Subsequently Dept. of Library and Information Science was established in 1994 offering one-year BLISc course with two permanent teachers and an intake of ten students to this course. This is the only affiliated college under the Calicut University offering library science courses. The Dept. started offering Post-graduate course since 2013 with a two-year integrated MLISc course. The Dept. was actively engaged with research and publication activities. Minor and Major research projects were awarded by the UGC to the Dept. for under taking the research activities. And a number of workshops and training programmes were conducted over this period of 25 years on a number of relevant topics. The Dept. celebrated its silver jubilee year in 2019 when it completed a quarter century of its growth.

Vision

The vision of this Dept. of Library and Information Science is to groom a band of young graduates in theoretical and professional training of knowledge organization and archiving in the highly competitive digital society of knowledge generation. The Department has taken with it the mission of designing and developing a curriculum to suit the vision and to impart instructional programmes at graduate and post-graduate levels for producing highly competent professionals fit for this job. The Dept. will strive to conduct research in emerging areas and to innovate new vistas and techniques of knowledge organization. It has also taken the responsibility of developing instructional and training programmes with a mix of information communication technologies.
